PROACTIVELY PREVENTING RSV DURING PEAK SEASON – AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL (AIH) IMPLEMENTS MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN

29/06/2025

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is increasing and is the cause of severe pneumonia and bronchiolitis in young children, especially infants, premature babies, or those with underlying health conditions. RSV accounts for up to 80% of severe respiratory infections in children aged 6 months – 5 years and is the second leading cause of death in children under 1 year old. The disease spreads quickly and often worsen between the 3rd and 5th day after the onset of symptoms.

The good news is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two monoclonal antibody therapies: Palivizumab - a short-acting monoclonal antibody) and Nirsevimab - a long-acting monoclonal antibody, used to help prevent severe RSV infections in infants and high-risk children. Palivizumab is currently available at the American International Hospital (AIH), helping to effectively prevent severe RSV infections in high-risk children.

Suitable candidates for vaccination with Palivizumab:

  • History of prematurity (gestational age ≤ 35 weeks) and currently ≤ 6 months old, at the beginning of RSV season.

  • Children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia require medical care in the previous 6 months, currently ≤ 24 months old, and at the beginning of RSV season.

  • Children with hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease, currently ≤ 24 months old, and at the beginning of RSV season.

The medication is administered as an intramuscular injection, with a monthly dose of 15mg/kg/dose. It does not interfere with other vaccines the child receives. A dose of Palivizumab is effective for approximately 30 days, so the child will receive 5 consecutive injections during the RSV season.

Contact Hotline (028) 3910 9999 or inbox the AIH Fanpage to get a risk assessment and vaccination schedule consultation for children.
