MANAGING NAUSEA AND VOMITING DURING CHEMOTHERAPY IN CANCER TREATMENT
Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy in cancer patient. In most cases, they are short-term problems and will disappear when the treatment ends.
Consult with your doctor immediately if the symptoms persist or make eating difficult.
There are many new medicines currently that can control treatment-related nausea and vomiting, so you don’t need to tolerate the discomfort anymore.
What causes nausea and vomiting in cancer patients?
There are many causes for nausea and vomiting, but they are just short-term side effects and tend to go away once the treatment stops.
However, let your doctor know if nausea and vomiting persist and lead to loss of appetite, irritability, fatigue and exhaustion.
What’s the impact of treatment-induced nausea and vomiting?
Severe and prolonged vomiting causes exhaustion and fear of treatment, which makes it difficult for you to get the treatment you need.
If this happens, talk to your doctor for prompt actions to help you maintain the proper energy and weight and relieve the discomfort.
How to manage nausea and vomiting? What to do if nausea and vomiting occur during chemotherapy or radiotherapy?
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Anti-emetics should be taken as prescribed, for example 4 times per day, even if you don’t feel nauseous. This will help prevent nausea and vomiting effectively.
Don’t wait until you vomit to take anti-emetics as this will reduce the prevention effect.
Sometimes it is necessary to combine two types of drugs at the same time to achieve the best result if severe nausea and vomiting occur.
Talk to your doctor for medication changes if the anti-emetics you’re prescribed don’t work or have any side effects.
- Try to avoid excessive sounds, images or smells (e.g. perfumes) that are more likely to trigger nausea and vomiting. Replace perfumes with tangerine peel, orange peel, eucalyptus, mint or lavender to make you feel more comfortable.
- Having some ginger chews can also create the sense of comfort.
- Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth after each episode of vomiting.
Nutrition advices for patients with treatment-induced nausea and vomiting
- Ensure that you are well fed during the treatment period. Normally, a light meal or a snack before treatment is best (Eating too much can cause vomiting more easily).
- Choose foods and drinks that are easy to digest or bring the feeling of comfort such as: mineral water, bland foods, sour candy, crackers or toast.
- Try to eat many small meals or snacks instead of three main meals.
- Add calorie and protein content to your diet. Nutritional supplements can be helpful during this time.
- Eat what you want to eat.
- You can try cold foods or foods served at room temperature, depending on your preferences.
- Improve your diet on the days when you feel well and have a high desire to eat. Listen to your body and don’t force yourself to eat.
- Eat homemade foods.
Nausea and vomiting usually occur around 5 to 10 days after chemotherapy, after which you will quickly regain or sometimes increase your appetite and everything will be back to normal soon.
