NO-SCALPEL VASECTOMY – A MINIMALLY INVASIVE MALE STERILIZATION PROCEDURE: SWIFT AND SAFE

NO-SCALPEL VASECTOMY – A MINIMALLY INVASIVE MALE STERILIZATION PROCEDURE: SWIFT AND SAFE

22/07/2025

American International Hospital (AIH) previously provided a conventional vasectomy. Recently, doctors in the Department of Nephrology – Urology - Andrology have performed an no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) technique, which has been proven a contraceptive effectiveness rate of over 99%. The procedure is quick, typically completed within 20 minutes, the patients only need a short rest post procedural period of 1–2 hours and can return home the same day. It is minimally invasive, patients experience rapid recovery, with minimal risk of complications and almost no scarring. Especially, no impact on daily activities or sexual life.

What is no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV)?

Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective family planning for men. In recent years, in line with the global trend toward “minimally invasive medicine”, the No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique has been globally applied, as well as in a few public hospitals in Vietnam, and is currently being implemented at the American International Hospital (AIH).

NSV is a male sterilization method that differs from the traditional technique that require incisions in the scrotal area, NSV utilizes a specialized tool to create a tiny hole in the scrotal skin. Through this small puncture, the doctor controls and delicately exposes the vas deferens, using the least invasive technique to ligate the sperm duct. This procedure causes minimal bleeding, is quick to perform, and leaves almost no scarring afterward.

“It should be emphasized that it is a simple surgical procedure, it has been proven highly effective, helping prevent sperm from entering the semen of men during the ejaculation, resulting in a very high, nearly absolute contraceptive effect. Most importantly, NSV does not affect physiological function or sexual pleasure, allowing men to maintain their sex life and normal male hormones after the procedure. After male sterilization using the NSV technique, patients can still have the vas deferens reconnected via microsurgery (reversal vaso-vasostomy using a surgical microscope) if they want to have children again. This is a specialized procedure currently being implemented at the Department of Urology - Andrology at American International Hospital (AIH)”, as emphasized by Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, MD, PhD.

The No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique has been globally applied, as well as in a few public hospitals in Vietnam, and is currently being implemented at the American International Hospital (AIH).

Mr. J.L., a 45-year-old French customer, who is living and working in HCMC, came to AIH hoping to find a long-term birth control method.

After consulting with Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien MD; PhD. – Head of the Department of Nephrology – Urology - Andrology, Mr. J.L. has chosen no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV). The procedure took place quickly within 20 minutes, required no skin incisions, minimal pain, and no antibiotics or painkillers were used after the procedure. He was able to return home after only 1–2 hours of monitoring at the hospital. With a feeling relaxed and recovering well, Mr. J.L. shared that: “I was truly surprised and pleased - everything went much more smoothly than I had imagined.

When should men consider a vasectomy?

  • Already have the desired number of children and no longer wish to have more.

  • A desire to share the responsibility of family planning with their partner.

  • There are contraindications to other contraceptive methods (e.g., the wife has allergies to hormonal medications, allergic reactions to intrauterine devices, or underlying health conditions…).

  • The couple is seeking and choosing a long-term, highly effective, low-complication, and convenient contraceptive solution.
