FLAT FEET SCREENING: AN IMPORTANT STEP IN ROUTINE CHECKUPS FOR CHILDREN AT AIH

30/05/2026

When monitoring a child’s development, most parents tend to focus on weight, height, or nutrition. However, besides these familiar growth indicators, musculoskeletal abnormalities are often overlooked, with flat feet being one of the most common conditions.

Flat feet occur when the arch of the foot collapses, causing the sole to come into near-complete contact with the ground. This condition is quite common in young children and may affect walking patterns, mobility, and long-term musculoskeletal development if not properly monitored and managed.

In reality, not all cases of flat feet in children are abnormal. During the early years of life, many children have not yet developed a clearly defined foot arch because the fat pad under the sole is still thick. The arch usually develops gradually when children reach 2–3 years of age. However, if the condition persists or is accompanied by signs such as frequent leg fatigue, frequent falls, inward or outward foot deviation while walking, or pain after physical activity, children should be monitored and treated promptly to help minimize future mobility issues.

According to Pediatric and Neonatal doctors, many movement-related problems in children often begin with very subtle changes that parents may not easily notice during daily activities. Therefore, routine checkups not only help monitor growth but also play an important role in the early detection of conditions that may affect a child’s overall development.

At American International Hospital (AIH), flat feet screening is integrated into children’s routine general health checkups as part of a comprehensive child development monitoring strategy. During each visit, doctors do more than measure height and weight; they also assess overall mobility, posture, leg alignment, and foot structure to detect early signs of musculoskeletal abnormalities.

If flat feet or other musculoskeletal abnormalities are suspected, the child will be evaluated in coordination with Orthopedic specialists to assess the severity, monitor age-appropriate development, and provide suitable support recommendations. In some cases, children may improve through movement support exercises or physical therapy, while more complex cases may require advanced interventions to ensure optimal mobility and long-term development.
