DOES VASECTOMY AFFECT SEXUAL FUNCTION?
“Does a vasectomy affect sexual activity?” This is one of the common questions men have when considering and deciding on a long-term contraceptive method.
According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, PhD, MD – Head of the Nephrology, Urology & Andrology Division at American International Hospital (AIH), a vasectomy is a procedure that only prevents sperm from entering the semen during ejaculation. In other words, it does not affect sexual function, hormone levels, or sexual pleasure. Men can still maintain their sexual desire, erectile function, and normal sexual life after the procedure.
WHY DOES VASECTOMY NOT AFFECT MEN’S SEXUAL PERFORMANCE?
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, PhD, MD, explains that to better understand this, it is important to distinguish between reproductive function and sexual function.
The vas deferens primarily transports sperm produced in the epididymis within the scrotum to the seminal vesicles, where they mix with seminal fluid before being expelled during ejaculation. After a vasectomy, sperm can no longer enter the semen and therefore cannot participate in fertilization.
Meanwhile, testosterone, a hormone that plays an important role in sexual desire and many male sexual characteristics, continues to be produced normally by the Leydig cells in the testes. A vasectomy does not interfere with the production of this hormone.

Therefore, after a vasectomy, men:
Can maintain their sexual desire completely normally, just as before the procedure.
Experience no impact on erectile function, as a vasectomy does not interfere with the mechanisms involved in an erection.
Continue to experience normal sensation and sexual pleasure during intercourse.
Continue to ejaculate normally. The difference is that the semen will no longer contain sperm once the remaining sperm have been cleared from the reproductive tract (typically after 3 months).
Continue to produce sperm in the testes; sperm that are not released through ejaculation are naturally reabsorbed by the body.
Simply put, a vasectomy affects fertility by preventing sperm from entering the semen, but it does not alter male sexual function or sexual life.
POSITIVE IMPACT ON COUPLES’ INTIMATE LIFE
After a vasectomy, some couples may feel more comfortable and confident in their intimate life as they have fewer concerns about the risk of an unintended pregnancy. When psychological stress is relieved, both partners can enjoy intimacy and maintain a more natural marital relationship.

HOW IS NO-SCALPEL VASECTOMY (NSV) PERFORMED?
Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective family planning methods available to men. In recent years, in line with the growing trend toward minimally invasive medicine, the No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique has been widely adopted worldwide and has also been implemented at American International Hospital (AIH).
NSV is a minimally invasive male sterilization procedure that does not require an incision in the scrotal skin using a conventional surgical scalpel. Instead, the doctor uses specialized instruments to create a very small opening in the scrotal skin, through which the vas deferens is gently accessed and then quickly isolated and ligated. With controlled manipulation and minimal dissection, the technique minimizes tissue damage, typically resulting in less bleeding, a shorter procedure time than the conventional technique, easier recovery, and very little pain. It does not require suturing of the scrotal skin and generally leaves little to no visible scarring.

At American International Hospital (AIH), conventional vasectomy was previously performed. In recent years, doctors in the Nephrology, Urology & Andrology Division have adopted the No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique, with a contraceptive effectiveness rate of over 99%.
The procedure is completed quickly, typically within 15–20 minutes. Patients only need to rest for a short period of approximately 1–2 hours and can return home the same day. Thanks to its minimally invasive nature, NSV allows for rapid recovery, causes very little pain, has a low risk of complications, generally leaves little to no scarring, and, importantly, does not interfere with daily activities or sexual life.
WHO MAY CONSIDER A VASECTOMY?
A vasectomy may be a suitable option for men who:
Are couples who have had the desired number of children or have decided not to have any more children.
Want to take a more active role in sharing contraceptive responsibility with their partner, rather than leaving family planning to depend solely on the woman.
Are unable to use or have difficulty with other contraceptive methods, such as when their partner has contraindications to certain forms of contraception.
Prefer a long-term contraceptive method that is convenient, has very few side effects, and offers a high level of effectiveness.

At American International Hospital (AIH), the No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique is performed by an experienced team of specialists in Nephrology, Urology & Andrology.
Beyond the technical aspects of the procedure, AIH focuses on providing comprehensive, personalized care—from medical examination and health assessment to thorough pre-procedure counseling, as well as post-procedure care instructions and follow-up.
With a focus on minimally invasive treatment, safety, convenience, and rapid recovery, NSV at AIH enables men to take an active role in choosing a suitable family planning solution while providing peace of mind regarding their health and sexual function.
