CROSSING BORDERS FOR BRAIN TUMOR TREATMENT, CAMBODIAN PATIENT ENDS PERSISTENT EPILEPSY

CROSSING BORDERS FOR BRAIN TUMOR TREATMENT, CAMBODIAN PATIENT ENDS PERSISTENT EPILEPSY

14/07/2026

Placing her full trust in the expertise of the medical team at the American International Hospital (AIH), Ms. H.M. (44 years old, Phnom Penh, Cambodia) traveled hundreds of kilometers to Vietnam for surgical treatment of a meningioma. After 7 days of treatment, the patient made an impressive recovery, putting an end to her prolonged seizures and convulsions.

Brain tumor resection using minimally invasive microsurgical techniques

Previously, Ms. H.M. (44 years old, from Phnom Penh, Cambodia) frequently experienced epileptic seizures characterized by limb convulsions, drooling, and a temporary loss of control. This prolonged condition degraded the patient's quality of life, while placing a psychological burden on her family, who lived in constant anxiety over the threat of another seizure occurring at any moment.

Following an examination and a cranial MRI scan at AIH, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Specialist Level I, Head of the Neurosurgery and Spine Unit, diagnosed the patient with a left frontoparietal meningioma measuring 8cm x 8cm x 10cm. This region of the brain plays a critical role in motor control. At the time of admission, the patient exhibited subtle weakness in the right hand, indicating that the tumor was progressively compromising neurological function.

The patient has left frontoparietal meningioma, causing seizures, epilepsy, and right arm weakness.

Following a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Specialist Level I indicated microsurgical resection of the tumor. The surgery posed a challenge as the meningioma had infiltrated the dura mater and the frontoparietal skull bone, while also adhering to the entire wall of the lateral ventricle. The boundary between healthy tissue and the lesion was poorly defined, requiring the surgeon to operate with precision to resect the tumor while preserving neurological structures.

Under the surgical microscope, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung and his team meticulously dissected and completely resected the tumor. Subsequently, they reconstructed the dura mater using an autologous subdermal fascial graft and repaired the cranial defect with a titanium mesh to ensure aesthetic outcomes as well as cranial protection.

Impressive postoperative recovery

Immediately after the operation, the patient experienced no pain or paralysis, showing an impressive recovery. Thanks to the hair-sparing technique, the patient felt as if they had hardly undergone brain surgery.

After 7 days of hospitalization and rehabilitation, the patient had good mobility, full bladder control, and could perform daily activities normally. The epileptic seizures and convulsions were fully controlled once the tumor was removed.

The patient’s daughter joyfully shared: “Previously, every time my mother had a seizure, the whole family was extremely worried and constantly lived in a state of anxiety. Seeing her recover so well after the surgery, our family is highly satisfied with the quality of treatment at AIH and the dedication of Dr. Hung.”

According to Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Specialist Level I, currently, advancements in microneurosurgery are opening up more effective treatment opportunities for patients with brain tumors.

At the American International Hospital (AIH), brain tumor surgeries are performed with the assistance of an advanced surgical microscope system, which allows neurosurgeons to clearly visualize anatomical structures at high magnification, ranging from healthy brain tissue and the vascular system to critical nerves. Thanks to this high-definition visualization, surgeons can precisely identify the boundary between the tumor and the surrounding brain tissue, thereby performing meticulous dissection to maximize tumor resection while preserving eloquent brain areas.

AIH masters specialized microneurosurgical techniques, to treat a wide range of complex brain tumors.

Particularly for deep-seated tumors located near motor, language, or critical vascular structures, this technique minimizes damage and reduces the risk of postoperative neurological complications, such as paresis, language disorders, or neurological deficits.

Not only focusing on tumor resection, AIH also simultaneously implements multiple advanced techniques, including dural reconstruction, cranial defect reconstruction using specialized materials, and aesthetic neurosurgery. These solutions optimize therapeutic efficacy, protect neurological function, restore cranial structure, limit postoperative deformity, and enhance aesthetic outcomes, thereby boosting patient confidence after treatment.

Furthermore, a modern anesthesia strategy combined with an early rehabilitation program helps alleviate pain, limit complications, and accelerate patient recovery.
