CHILDREN WITH LOOSE STOOLS: WHEN SHOULD YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR?

CHILDREN WITH LOOSE STOOLS: WHEN SHOULD YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR?

10/08/2022

Children and infants who frequently have loose stools are a worry and concern for nursing mothers. According to Dr. Pham Cong Luan, Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology, American International Hospital (AIH), children at each age stage and each diet will produce different stool properties. Does a child with loose stools have diarrhea? And when should you see a doctor? Parents, let's learn about the problem of squishy stools in children!

► For newborns

Newborns, especially in the first 6 months, often have loose stools many times a day, on average from 3 times, to 10 times a day, or more. The reason is because breast milk contains many antibodies that act as natural laxatives. In other words, it is completely normal for newborns to have loose stools, not diarrhea.

When the child's stool looks clammy, liquid, yellow, green, or brown, the mother can rest assured because this is a sign that the child's digestive tract is still good.

However, loose stools in children will be worrying and considered diarrhea if the mother notices the following symptoms:

  • Fever above 38 degrees Celsius
  • The time between bowel movements is shortened and the number of bowel movements increases
  • Stool changes color and smell: Stool turns green and has an unpleasant odor, sometimes accompanied by foam.
  • Blood in stool
  • Black stools, or white stools (discolored stools).
  • Children show signs of dehydration: sunken eyes, dry lips, thirst, restlessness...

► For infants

If a child has loose, watery stools 3 or more times a day, or the stool properties change suddenly, it can be a warning sign that the child is suffering from a digestive disease such as acute diarrhea, intestinal infection, etc.

► Children have loose stools, how to treat them and when to see a doctor?

Treatment for loose stools will depend on the cause. When a child has diarrhea, the mother needs to:

  • Continue breastfeeding according to your baby's needs
  • Feed your baby several times, each feeding less frequently if your baby has diarrhea and vomiting.
  • For babies who are formula-fed and have loose stools continuously for more than 2 weeks, mothers should take the baby to the doctor to find the cause, and may need to change the baby's milk and/or diet.
  • For older children who are already on solid foods, mothers need to give them rehydration and electrolyte solutions so that they do not become dehydrated.

Diarrhea is the third leading cause of death after neonatal deaths and pneumonia in children under 5 years old. Therefore, parents need to take their children to the doctor when they show signs of diarrhea or unusual bowel movements. If treated promptly and properly cared for, loose stools will improve very quickly.

Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology, American International Hospital provides a full range of Pediatric medical examination and treatment services, including: general health check-ups; vaccination; monitor children's physical and mental development; nutrition consulting; and disease diagnosis and treatment services.

The pediatric examination area at AIH is divided into two separate areas: an area for healthy children and an area for sick children, with the purpose of separating patients to avoid cross-infection. When a child comes to the hospital with symptoms suspected of having the disease, he or she will be taken to a separate examination area, so the disease can be triaged and isolated from the beginning.
