PREVENTIVE DIETARY REGIME FOR FATTY LIVER

Fatty liver is a pathological condition caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Normally, the liver functions to detoxify and produce bile. Fatty liver disease damages the liver and impairs its normal functioning.

There are two main types of fatty liver: alcohol-related (excessive alcohol consumption) and non-alcohol-related (can occur even if you have never consumed alcohol).

The more severe form is called steatohepatitis, which can progress to more serious conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Regardless of the type you have, the best treatment approach is to change your lifestyle - including weight loss if you are overweight or obese, avoiding alcohol consumption, following a healthy diet, and engaging in physical activity.

► The best diet for fatty liver includes:
 
  • Variety of fruits, vegetables, and types of nuts.
  • Whole grain cereals
  • Limit intake of saturated fat from animal products
  • Limit intake of salt and sugar
  • Do not consume alcohol, beer
► To keep the liver healthy, nutrition experts recommend using the following foods:
 
  • Vegetable oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, … contain high amounts of monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats and are beneficial in increasing “good cholesterol” and decreasing “bad cholesterol”, lowering blood pressure. Good cholesterol HDL plays a role in transporting bad cholesterol back to the liver. The liver then removes them from the body. High HDL cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. On the contrary, “bad cholesterol” (LDL and VLDL) will accumulate in the blood, forming plaques that restrict the flow of blood cells, leading to the risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. To ensure you receive the greatest benefits from vegetable oils, you should not use certain types of oil for frying or stir-frying because they will be transformed into harmful types of fat for the body.
  • Various types of oily fish (such as salmon, tuna, etc.) contain omega-3 fatty acids - this is a type of polyunsaturated fat and is a good fat, providing similar benefits to vegetable oils.
  • Some types of seeds and nuts (walnuts, chia seeds, chestnuts, etc.) also contain a high amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are good for your health.

► Some foods to avoid are:
 
  • Alcohol: This is the main cause of fatty liver disease as well as other liver diseases.
  • Sweet foods, cakes, candies,…: Foods that are high in sugar such as candies, cookies, soft drinks, fruit juices… are the types of food that patients with fatty liver need to stay away from. Because they raise blood sugar levels, leading to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is also one of the risk factors for fatty liver disease.
  • Fried and stir-fried foods with a lot of oil.
  • Processed foods such as instant noodles, sausages, cold cuts, snacks, and packaged foods dried foods,….: These are nutrient-poor foods with little health benefits, making it difficult for you to control energy intake, leading to weight gain and an increased risk of fatty liver disease.
  • Animal fat, skin, and organs contain a high amount of saturated fats and bad cholesterol, they increase the concentration of triglycerides in the blood as well as the concentration of cholesterol, leading to a worsening of fatty liver condition.
  • In addition to the diet, you should pay attention to weight loss if you are overweight or obese. The more overweight you are, the more likely you will be to develop fatty liver disease. If your weight is normal, you should also engage in physical activity, exercise, at least 30 minutes a day for good health.
