► The importance of vitamin A for children
Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient for children’s health and comprehensive development. It helps strengthen the immune system to combat infections, supports good vision, and enables children to distinguish colors. A deficiency in vitamin A can lead to serious health issues, such as impaired vision, weakened immunity, and an increased risk of infections, including skin infections, diarrhea, and respiratory diseases.
► How to prevent vitamin A deficiency in children:
- Breastfeeding: Breast milk is the best source of vitamin A for young children.
- Balanced nutrition: Improve meals with animal-based foods such as liver, chicken, fat from meat, eggs, milk, cream, and butter. Include enough fat or oil in meals to aid in vitamin A absorption. Add vegetables high in vitamin A precursors, such as yellow and red vegetables (carrots, pumpkin, spinach, and ripe papaya), dark green leafy vegetables, and fortified cooking oils like palm oil.
- Preventive vitamin A supplementation: To combat vitamin A deficiency, the Ministry of Health organizes two vitamin A supplementation campaigns every year, in June and December. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the nearest healthcare center for advice and the appropriate dosage of vitamin A.
