NEWBORN SCREENING - A STARTING GIFT FOR A HEALTHY CHILD

NEWBORN SCREENING - A STARTING GIFT FOR A HEALTHY CHILD

18/07/2025

Every baby born is a miracle. However, hidden behind a healthy appearance can be congenital disorders or abnormalities that cannot be detected by the naked eye or through routine examinations. If not diagnosed and intervened promptly, these abnormalities can seriously affect the child's health.

At American International Hospital (AIH), we apply modern and optimal screening methods to early detect potential abnormalities, helping to protect children's health from the very first days of life.

  • Newborn screening for 73 diseases: This is a crucial test performed within the first 48-72 hours after birth, helping to detect early 73 dangerous congenital diseases, typically including: congenital hypothyroidism, G6PD deficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, amino acid metabolism disorders, fatty acid disorders, organic acid disorders, etc. Results are usually available after 7-10 days, with abnormal screening test results being available sooner and timely consultation provided by a pediatrician.

  • Audiometry: Its significance is crucial, as hearing forms the foundation for a child's language, communication, and intellectual development; approximately 1–3 out of every 1,000 children are born with congenital hearing impairment.

Ultrasound is a safe, non-radioactive, non-invasive, and painless diagnostic imaging method, making it safe for use in both pregnant women and newborns. This technique not only allows for the examination of internal organs but also provides structural images through various sections due to the flexibility of the transducer. Early ultrasound examinations can help in timely diagnosis and management, preventing severe sequelae or irreversible consequences.

  • Pediatric neurosonography: Transcranial ultrasound via the anterior fontanelle leverages the open fontanelles in newborns to examine the anatomical structures of the brain, particularly the ventricles and brain parenchyma. This technique aids in detecting congenital abnormalities such as cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism, hydrocephalus, subdural hemorrhage, and other neurological conditions.

  • Pediatric echocardiography: According to clinical data, congenital heart disease occurs in approximately 8 out of 1,000 live births, but only about 2–3 cases are diagnosed before 1 year of age when clear symptoms are present. Because many congenital heart diseases do not present with clear clinical manifestations, are difficult to detect through physical examination or oxygen saturation measurement, echocardiography is necessary to screen for abnormalities such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, or complex abnormalities like transposition of the great arteries.

  • Pediatric abdominal ultrasound: Abdominal ultrasound is the optimal screening tool for abdominal diseases in newborns. Many congenital malformations, structural abnormalities, and abdominal tumors cannot be detected through clinical observation. Ultrasound allows for the evaluation of abdominal organs such as the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, and portal venous system to detect morphological abnormalities or related pathologies.

  • Pediatric hip ultrasound: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the most common hip malformation in infants and young children, with an incidence of approximately 1,5/1,000 live births. If not detected and treated early, the condition can lead to limb length discrepancy, limited hip joint mobility, and a limping gait. Hip ultrasound helps assess the structure and stability of the joint and detect early abnormalities for appropriate intervention. Hip ultrasound is performed when the child is 1 month old.
