According to Dr. Vo Bich Dai Hao – Head of the General Surgery Department at AIH, gastrointestinal cancer is trending younger and is becoming more prevalent due to dietary habits, modern lifestyle, and life pressures. This requires everyone to be more aware and proactive in early screening to increase the chances of detecting the disease in its early stages – the stage that is easy to treat and has the best prognosis.

WHY SHOULD WE SCREEN FOR GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER EARLY?

Gastrointestinal cancer refers to a group of malignant diseases that affect organs such as the stomach, colon, esophagus, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and small intestine. This type of cancer is among the most common in Vietnam.

Regular screening helps:

  • Detect precancerous lesions (such as polyps).

  • Diagnose early when cancer has not metastasized.

  • Increase the chances of successful treatment.

  • Reduce treatment costs and improve quality of life.

WHO SHOULD SCREEN EARLY?

  • Individuals aged 40 and older, especially those with prolonged digestive symptoms.

  • People with a family history of gastrointestinal cancer.

  • Those with risk factors such as: smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, hepatitis B/C.

  • Individuals with underlying conditions like chronic colitis, cirrhosis, or gastric reflux.

EARLY RECOGNITION OF G.I CANCER WARNING SIGNS – THE EARLIER IT IS DETECTED, THE EASIER IT IS TO CURE!

Gastrointestinal cancer can silently develop over a long period without causing obvious symptoms. However, the body still sends out important "warning signals." Listening to and recognizing these signs early can help save your own life.

Signs NOT to be underestimated:

1. Colorectal cancer:

  • Prolonged digestive disorders: diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between the two.

  • Abnormal changes in stool: small, flat stools, or stools with blood (bright red or black).

  • Lower abdominal pain, abdominal distension, persistent bloating.

  • Fatigue, weight loss, and unexplained anemia.

6. Gallbladder and bile duct cancer:

  • Pain in the right upper quadrant after eating fatty foods.

  • Jaundice, itching, fever, pale stools.

7. Small intestine cancer:

  • Vague abdominal pain, nausea, blood or black stools.

  • Persistent anemia, weight loss, abdominal masses (in late stages).

COMMON SCREENING METHODS:

  • Gastrointestinal endoscopy (stomach, colon): Helps detect polyps and early lesions.

  • Blood tests: Check for cancer markers or related abnormalities.

  • Diagnostic imaging: Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, PET to identify tumors.

  • Biopsy: Taking a sample of suspicious tissue to determine cancer cells.

PREVENTION AND PROACTIVE SCREENING FOR GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER

It is not possible to completely prevent cancer, but the risk can be significantly reduced if you:
•    Maintain a healthy diet that is low in red meat and fat, while increasing the intake of vegetables and fruits.
•    Exercise regularly and manage your weight.
•    Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
•    Undergo regular screenings, especially for individuals over 40 years old or those with risk factors.
Gastrointestinal cancer can be effectively managed if detected early. Do not wait until clear symptoms appear before seeking medical consultation. Proactive screening is a way to protect yourself and your loved ones from this dangerous disease.
