FREQUENT NOSEBLEEDS: SIGNS THAT REVEAL MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS

21/11/2022

The phenomenon of nosebleeds commonly occurs in children aged 3 to 10 years old. The main factors leading to nosebleeds are excessively cold or dry weather, which can cause rhinitis in children. When that happens, the child's nose becomes significantly itchy, and unconsciously, the child picks the nose, rubs the nose, or scratches the nose, causing constant strong impact on the nose, leading to nosebleeds. This can be considered the most common cause in children.

The second cause comes from children experiencing injuries such as falls, collisions, or any strong impact on the nose. In general, these two causes can be easily treated with first aid at home. The most important cause for parents to pay attention is the cause coming from other factors rather than the nose, which is systemic illness. For example, nosebleeds caused by disorders of blood clotting or other metabolic diseases such as dengue fever. This is a systemic disease that causes nosebleeds.

There are two types of nosebleeds, which are anterior and posterior nosebleeds. Anterior nosebleed occurs when the blood vessels in the front of the nose rupture and bleed. Posterior nosebleeds occur from the posterior or deepest part of the nose. With a posterior nosebleed, the blood will flow downwards the back of the throat and can potentially cause the child to fall into a dangerous state.

If a child experiences anterior nosebleed, his/her mother can quickly give first aid by sitting the child up, then gently pressing the soft part of the nose. Keep the child’s nose closed for 10 minutes, with the body leaning forward and breathing through the mouth. The child absolutely should not be allowed to lie down during this time. Lying down could lead to swallowing blood and irritating the stomach.

Regarding the case of nasal bleeding with a tendency to flow down the throat in children. This case is very rare but more severe than anterior nosebleed and should not be treated at home. Please take the child to the hospital so that the doctor can assist in diagnosis and treatment.

If the condition of nosebleed becomes severe, doctors will conduct a health examination of the child to determine the cause. First, the child's nose should be examined to determine if there is any foreign object lodged in it. Performing certain tests will help doctors diagnose the underlying cause of the nosebleed, including Complete Blood Count, Coagulation tests, Rhinoscopy, Nasal CT scan, Facial Nasal X-ray. Depending on the underlying cause of the nosebleed, the doctor will examine and provide appropriate treatment.

According to Dr. Pham Cong Luan – Head of Pediatrics - Neonatology department said: If a child has severe nosebleeds, doctors will quickly examine whether there is any foreign object stuck in the child's nose. After that, depending on the condition of the illness, various tests will be conducted such as complete blood count, coagulation test, rhinoscopy, nasal CT scan, and facial-nasal X-ray to accurately determine the cause and appropriate treatment approach for the child's health condition.

At the American International Hospital (AIH) – Pediatrics department, our team of pediatricians will personally examine and spend a lot of time with each patient, learning details of the child’s medical history to accurately assess the symptoms of the disease, avoid missing any important details, and minimize the risk of complications, rare diseases... In addition, with modern facilities equipment, rapid support of tests, ultrasound, X-rays, to provide necessary indications and timely treatment approach.
