DENGUE FEVER DOES NOT SPARE ANYONE – TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT IT TODAY!

22/06/2026

The rainy season is approaching, which is also the time when dengue fever tends to increase. The cumulative number of dengue cases from the beginning of 2026 to week 21 in Ho Chi Minh City is 17,278 cases. It is forecast that the number of cases may continue to rise in the coming months as the peak of the rainy season begins.

Dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by the Dengue virus, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The disease can affect all age groups, from children to adults, and may lead to serious complications such as shock, severe bleeding, and multi-organ failure if not detected and treated promptly.

Signs and symptoms

  • Acute fever lasting ≤ 7 days, sudden onset of high and persistent fever that is difficult to reduce;

  • Headache, muscle pain, joint pain, pain behind the eyes;

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, rash;

  • Skin hemorrhagic spots or a positive tourniquet test.

Seek medical care immediately if any warning signs appear:

  • Severe abdominal pain;

  • Persistent vomiting;

  • Abnormal bleeding: bleeding gums, nosebleeds, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, vaginal bleeding, or blood in urine;

  • Lethargy, restlessness, extreme fatigue;

  • Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing;

  • Children refusing to eat or breastfeed, or remaining tired even after the fever subsides.

Treatment

Currently, there is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Management mainly focuses on symptomatic treatment: reducing fever with paracetamol and early oral rehydration. Close monitoring of symptoms to detect early signs of deterioration and provide timely intervention is a key factor in reducing the risk of severe complications, organ failure, and mortality.

Proactive prevention through simple but effective measures:

  • Spend 10–15 minutes each week checking and cleaning your living environment;

  • Keep water containers tightly covered;

  • Eliminate items that can collect rainwater;

  • Change water in vases and regularly scrub water containers;

  • Sleep under mosquito nets, wear long-sleeved clothing, and apply mosquito bite prevention measures;

  • Cooperate with health authorities in larva eradication and disease prevention campaigns.

Vaccination against dengue is one of the measures that helps reduce the risk of infection and the likelihood of severe progression. People should consult doctors or vaccination centers for advice on suitable candidates and vaccination schedules.

Remember: No larvae, no mosquitoes – no dengue fever.
