AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL (AIH) HAS BEEN CERTIFIED AS A BABY-FRIENDLY HOSPITAL INITIATIVE

30/09/2025

Recently, the American International Hospital (AIH) was officially recognized by the Ministry of Health as a “Baby-Friendly Hospital” (Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative – BFHI). This milestone marks an important step in AIH’s journey to enhance the quality of maternal and child care, while reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a model implemented in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia based on the 2018 WHO/UNICEF guidelines. In these updated guidelines, countries were called upon to integrate BFHI into their national health systems; however, no specific instructions on how such integration should be carried out were provided. As a result, each country has had to develop its own implementation model.

On May 28, 2025, a monitoring team from Hung Vuong Hospital and the organization Alive & Thrive – FHI 360 conducted an on-site assessment at AIH in accordance with the BFHI criteria issued by the Ministry of Health (Decision No. 5913/QD-BYT). The assessment covered essential newborn care (EENC), skin-to-skin contact (SSC), and breastfeeding support.

The American International Hospital (AIH) has fully met the stringent criteria such as:

  • Providing counseling for mothers during the antenatal period;

  • Practicing immediate skin-to-skin contact after both vaginal and cesarean deliveries;

  • Supporting early initiation of breastfeeding and minimizing the use of formula;

  • Maintaining a hospital environment that is friendly and supportive of exclusive breastfeeding;

  • Implementing creative and effective health communication and education initiatives.

The evaluation team recognized the outstanding professional quality at AIH, from its well-trained team of physicians, midwives, and nurses to its internationally standardized postnatal care processes. The BFHI designation is not only a professional achievement but also a long-term commitment by AIH to accompany mothers and babies from the very first hours of life.

Breast milk is the very first and the best gift a mother can give her child. At AIH, we are proud to accompany mothers in offering this precious gift — with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and care,” shared a representative of the American International Hospital (AIH).

Programs Accompanying Mothers Before and After Childbirth

In addition to meeting international BFHI standards, the American International Hospital (AIH) also implements a wide range of comprehensive support programs for expectant and new mothers. Among these are complimentary reproductive health counseling classes, held twice a month, with the participation of specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics–Neonatology, and Nutrition. These sessions provide parents with essential knowledge on breastfeeding, prenatal care, newborn care skills, and psychological preparation to confidently welcome their baby.

At the same time, AIH has also introduced a dedicated postnatal care package exclusively for mothers giving birth at the hospital, designed to support comprehensive physical and emotional recovery. The package includes:

  • Guidance on breast massage to stimulate lactation and proper breastfeeding practices;

  • Lactation-friendly nutrition with a daily menu of three main meals and two snacks;

  • Postnatal care including wound care, perineal hygiene, and breast physiotherapy;

  • 24/7 support from nurses and midwives;

  • Postnatal examination by a physician prior to discharge.

AIH’s postnatal care package not only supports mothers in achieving a faster recovery but also provides reassurance and timely assistance during the first days of the breastfeeding journey — a period that is both unfamiliar and profoundly sacred.
