AIH REPRESENTATIVES AT THE VNICS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2026: AFFIRMING INTERNATIONAL-STANDARD INFECTION CONTROL QUALITY

AIH REPRESENTATIVES AT THE VNICS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2026: AFFIRMING INTERNATIONAL-STANDARD INFECTION CONTROL QUALITY

08/10/2026

On October 2–3, 2026, MSc., MD Hoang Thi Khanh Minh and MSc. Pharmacist Han Ngoc Hong Nhiem from the Infection Control Unit, Quality Management Department, American International Hospital (AIH), represented AIH at the VNICS Scientific Conference 2026, themed “Transforming Healthcare Through Excellence in Infection Control,” organized by the Vietnam Infection Control Society.

At the conference, the two AIH representatives presented two practice-based studies conducted at the hospital, focusing on monitoring compliance with and evaluating the effectiveness of infection prevention measures.

SURGICAL SITE INFECTION PREVENTION: FROM PRACTICE COMPLIANCE TO THE “ZERO HARM” GOAL

With the study “Assessment of Healthcare Workers’ Compliance with the Surgical Site Infection Prevention Bundle at American International Hospital (AIH) in 2026,” MSc. Pharmacist Han Ngoc Hong Nhiem focused on evaluating compliance with practices designed to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs), one of the complications that can significantly affect postoperative recovery and patient safety.

SSIs not only affect patients’ health but may also prolong hospital stays, increase treatment costs, and raise the risk of complications. At AIH, the SSI prevention bundle is implemented to ensure that key preventive measures are applied consistently and systematically. Therefore, systematically assessing compliance with the SSI prevention bundle plays an important role in identifying areas for improvement while maintaining practices that have demonstrated effectiveness.

ENVIRONMENTAL SURFACE HYGIENE: USING FLUORESCENT MARKERS TO ASSESS CLEANING EFFECTIVENESS

Taking a different approach, MSc., MD Hoang Thi Khanh Minh presented the study “Assessment of Environmental Surface Cleaning Compliance Using the Fluorescent Marker Method at AIH in 2025,” focusing on an aspect that may appear routine but plays an important role in hospital infection control: environmental and surface hygiene.

Hospital surfaces can harbor and contribute to the spread of pathogens such as MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter baumannii, and C. difficile. However, visual inspection alone does not always accurately reflect cleaning effectiveness. Therefore, AIH applies fluorescent markers and UV light inspection to provide a more objective assessment.

MSc., MD Hoang Thi Khanh Minh presents the study “Assessment of Environmental Surface Cleaning Compliance Using the Fluorescent Marker Method at AIH in 2025.”

Monitoring results in 2025 showed that 96.8% of assessed surfaces met the required standard (4,516/4,666), exceeding the 95% target, with the highest compliance rate reaching 99.2% in September. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of standardized cleaning procedures, routine monitoring, and direct feedback to staff. In addition to highlighting positive results, fluorescent monitoring also helped AIH identify groups of surfaces that were more likely to be missed during cleaning, particularly high-touch areas such as monitor screens, door handles, and waste bins. These findings provide a basis for the hospital to further refine its list of priority surfaces and develop more targeted training.

Based on these results, AIH continues to maintain regular fluorescent monitoring, strengthen on-site training, and standardize the list of areas requiring cleaning.
