TACHYCARDIA DURING PREGNANCY / SHOULD MOTHERS WORRY?
Cardiac activity plays an important role in maternal health as well as fetal growth and development. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, cardiac activity also has certain changes:
► Second trimester: the blood vessels in the mother's body begin to dilate or get bigger. This causes the mother's blood pressure mildly decreased.
► Third trimester: about 20% of blood volume in the body will flow to the uterus, which leads to the heart has to pump faster to circulate this blood volume. Your heart rate can increase by 10 to 20 beats per minute. When your mother's heart has to work harder, some abnormalities may occur including abnormal heartbeats such as tachycardia.
Tachycardia is a normal physiological phenomenon. However, if tachycardia accompanies with other symptoms, mothers need to be very careful because this can be a warning sign of gestational complications.
