TACHYCARDIA DURING PREGNANCY / SHOULD MOTHERS WORRY?

03/09/2022

Cardiac activity plays an important role in maternal health as well as fetal growth and development. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, cardiac activity also has certain changes:

► Second trimester: the blood vessels in the mother's body begin to dilate or get bigger. This causes the mother's blood pressure mildly decreased.

► Third trimester: about 20% of blood volume in the body will flow to the uterus, which leads to the heart has to pump faster to circulate this blood volume. Your heart rate can increase by 10 to 20 beats per minute. When your mother's heart has to work harder, some abnormalities may occur including abnormal heartbeats such as tachycardia.

Tachycardia is a normal physiological phenomenon. However, if tachycardia accompanies with other symptoms, mothers need to be very careful because this can be a warning sign of gestational complications.

► Causes of gestational tachycardia:

  • Anxiety or stress
  • Effects of increased blood volume
  • Foods or beverages consumed by mothers, such as foods containing caffeine
  • Cold medications and antihistamins contain pseudoephedrine (Nexafed, Sudafed Congestion)
  • Potential heart disorders, such as pulmonary hypertension or coronary artery disease
  • Heart damage from previous pregnancy
  • A potential medical problem such as thyropathy

► When should mother see a doctor?

According to Dr. Tang Quang Thai, Gynecology & Obstetrics - American International Hospital (AIH), if mothers often have tachycardia, doctor discussion is required. In addition, mothers should visit a medical facility immediately when tachycardia occurs simultaneously with other symptoms including: dyspnea, chest tightness, coughing up blood, irregular pulse, sudden fasst heart rate.
