PINK MUCUS DISCHARGE DURING PREGNANCY: WHAT PREGNANT WOMEN NEED TO KNOW
Pink mucus discharge at any time during pregnancy can become a concern for pregnant women. However, sometimes this discharge is just a normal phenomenon. So let's find out with the American International Hospital (AIH) some possible causes of pink mucus to determine if this condition affects the mother and the fetus.
► Bleeding due to implantation
At 4th gestational week, the embryo will attach deep and implant into the uterine wall. Because the uterine lining has many blood vessels, embryos implanted deep may leak some blood.
► Cervical cause
During pregnancy, the cervix will stretch to form a cervical canal containing many blood vessels, so it is easier to bleed than usual. Cervical irritation may occur after sexual intercourse, after a doctor's examination, or due to inflammation, infection.
► Ectopic Pregnancy
In rare cases, pinkish-brown discharge can result from ectopic pregnancy, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. The brown color that appears due to releasing old blood, not new blood (bright red). An ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening emergency if you experience bleeding accompanied by any symptoms including: dizziness, shoulder pain, fainting, lightheadedness, abdominal or pelvic pain.
► Miscarriage
Any bleeding that occurs during pregnancy can be an early sign of miscarriage. So, if you notice pink-brown discharge, pay attention to other symptoms including abdominal pain, bright red bleeding, ruptured membranes, abdominal pain, lower back pain.
► Causes related to placenta: one of them, low-lying placenta is commonly seen.
► Mucus plug detachment
When your body is about to go into labor, your cervix is soft and releasing mucus is considered normal. The mucus plug helps protect against bacteria entering your uterus. At the end of pregnancy, the mucus plugs burst, the amniotic fluid leaks or breaks may be the first sign of labor, so pregnant women should visit doctor to check.
Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nam recommends that when pregnant women notice a small amount of pink-brown discharge, do not worry too much. In most cases, a small amount of blood in discharge is normal. If the discharge is increased or you are bleeding with other symptoms, immediately contact the doctor or go to the hospital for examination.
At American International Hospital (AIH), doctors and nutritionists will monitor and advise on each case so that pregnant women have the most reasonable care plan for the maternal and fetal health. AIH is the first hospital in Vietnam to apply the American standard delivery room model - LDRP, allowing pregnant women and their families to have a comfortable and convenient experience in a single room for all 4 stages: Labor - Delivery (vaginal) - Recovery - Postpartum monitoring.
In particular, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at AIH is equipped with modern standards, along with a team of leading experts including doctors, neonatal nurses, physiotherapists, pediatric nutritionists, timely support for births, ensuring the best safety and care for the baby from birth.
