OTALGIA - SOME COMMON CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS
Otalgia (Earache) is very common medical problem for both children and adults. Although earache is rarely life-threatening, it creates many troubles in life. Let's find out some common causes and symptoms of this disease!
Two separate and distinct types of earache exist:
- Pain that originates within the ear is Primary earache :The pain of earache results from inflammation and swelling of structures that make up the ear. Including the external auditory canal, the tympanic membrane and the middle ear
- Pain that originates outside the ear is referred earache
Primary Earache Causes:
- Otitis externa
- Otitis media:
Referred Earache Causes:
- Cervical spondylosis, Soft tissue injury
- Dental ,TMJ, Sinonasal , Salivary gland
- Oropharyngeal disease, Tonsillitis , Hypopharynx, Larynx, Tongue
Otitis externa symptoms include:
- Gradual development of an earache
- Individuals with mild cases may describe an itch instead of pain
- Touching or pulling on the ear helix may worsen the pain
- Hearing loss because swelling of the external canal decreases the ability for sound to enter
- Ringing or Buzzing sound in the ear
- Swelling of the ear and thick drainage from the ear canal
Otitis media symptoms include:
Pain in the ear (most common symptom), although infants and young children may not be able to localize the pain and may be fussy and irritable.
Other symptoms of otitis media include:
- Hearing loss
- Ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear
- Full or plugged sensation in the ear
- Balance problem or vertigo ( uncommon)
- Fever
- Occasionally, discharge from ear
