KNEE CARTILAGE REGENERATION USING ARTHROSCOPY & MICROSURGERY – OPTIMIZE TREATMENT OUTCOME OF COMPLEX MENISCUS DERANGEMENT

08/08/2025

Knee cartilage regeneration using arthroscopic techniques combined with microsurgery (creating microfractures) is currently considered one of the modern and effective treatment methods, especially for lesions in joints in general and the knee joint in particular. Thanks to its advantages of minimal invasiveness and maximum preservation of natural joint structures, this method helps patients reduce pain, limit complications, and regain mobility quickly after surgery.

Patient D.K.N (48 years old, Indonesian nationality) came for examination at American International Hospital (AIH) with a prolonged condition of pain and swelling in the left knee joint, difficulty walking, a limping gait, and significant limitations when going up and down stairs, when performing knee flexion and extension movements, especially in a squatting position. Meanwhile, the patient's job requires a lot of movement, thus affecting quality of life and work.

At AIH, the patient was directly examined thorough by M.Sc., Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung – Specialist in Orthopedic Trauma – Medical Director. Based on the history of trauma, medical history, clinical examination, and the results of an MRI of the left knee joint, it was revealed that the patient suffered complex lesion of the medial meniscus of the left knee, degeneration, delaminated cartilage lesion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint, and knee joint effusion. To thoroughly address the lesion, the patient was indicated for arthroscopic intervention.

During the surgery, it was noted that the ligament system remained stable, there was complex lesion to the medial meniscus of the left knee, and the cartilage area of the lateral femoral condyle was fractured over a large area and deeply damaged, thus requiring timely intervention. This was also the main cause of severe arthritis and pain for the patient.

M.Sc., Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung performed reconstructive surgery on the damaged meniscus and carried out microsurgery.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung and the surgical team performed a reshaping of the damaged meniscus and conducted a microsurgery procedure (using special instruments to drill small holes in the damaged cartilage area), thereby releasing cells from the bone marrow and enhancing perfusion, stimulating the body to regenerate new cartilage tissue to help heal the injured area.

What is knee cartilage regeneration using arthroscopy & microsurgery?

Knee cartilage regeneration using microsurgery is an advanced treatment method in the field of orthopedics, developed to optimally restore complex knee cartilage lesions. This method leverages the advantages of endoscopy, allowing doctors to observe detailed joint structures through a high-resolution camera and intervene with high precision to treat damaged areas such as delaminated articular cartilage.

Knee cartilage regeneration using microsurgery is an advanced treatment method in orthopedics currently being applied at AIH.

Instead of exercising the damaged cartilage as was previously done, this modern technique allows for preservation of the suture of the meniscus, regenerating the articular cartilage surface, thereby maintaining the physiological function of the joint and preventing the risk of future degeneration. The outstanding advantages of this method are its ability to preserve the natural knee joint structure, minimize invasiveness, reduce post-operative pain, high aesthetic factors due to small surgical scars, shorten recovery time, and help patients quickly return to sports activities or daily life.

Currently, this technique is being effectively implemented at the Department of Orthopedics at American International Hospital (AIH), offering optimal treatment opportunities and superior quality of life for patients.

Applying PRP biotherapy after surgery helps increase treatment outcome.

At American International Hospital (AIH), with a modern endoscopic equipment system, internationally standardized sterile operating rooms, and a team of experienced orthopedic surgeons, AIH not only ensures the best treatment outcomes but also comprehensively focuses on the post-operative process, from physical therapy, rehabilitation to biological regeneration support methods.

According to M.Sc., Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung, individuals experiencing abnormal symptoms in the knee joint such as pain during movement, prolonged joint swelling, difficulty squatting or climbing stairs, especially after sports injuries, need to be examined early and treated correctly. Timely intervention not only helps preserve the structure and function of the knee joint but also plays a crucial role in preventing the risk of severe progressive degeneration and avoiding future joint replacement surgery.
