INCREDIBLE RECOVERY AFTER SEVERE MULTI-SPINAL INJURIES THANKS TO MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH

INCREDIBLE RECOVERY AFTER SEVERE MULTI-SPINAL INJURIES THANKS TO MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH

19/07/2025

From a patient who lost the ability to work, had difficulty moving to the point of crawling, suffered from urinary disorders and decreased physiological function, the patient made a spectacular recovery 2 days after surgery thanks to the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MISS) method at American International Hospital (AIH).

Silently enduring until… losing the ability to work

Mr. N.H.T (57 years old, Dong Thap), is a mechanic who has been dedicated to strenuous labor. For the past 10 years, he has lived with spinal pain and previously underwent surgery to treat a herniated disc. However, recently, the condition has not only recurred but also worsened; he endures pain and numbness radiating from his back down to his leg’s day and night, has difficulty controlling urination, and even experiences decreased physiological function, difficulty moving, sometimes having to crawl, and has almost lost the ability to work.

Despite his deteriorating health, Mr. N.H.T was hesitant to seek specialized medical examination, instead resorting to folk remedies such as using herbal medicine, acupuncture, and bloodletting. Only when his quality of life significantly declined did he visit the American International Hospital (AIH) where he was examined by Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, a 1st-degree specialist. After a thorough clinical examination and based on the results of MRI, X-ray, and electromyogram, Dr. Hung diagnosed him with severe disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and rotation of multiple vertebrae.

“Unlike simple disc herniation cases, this is a complex case with multiple spinal column injuries, lasting many years, comprehensively affecting the patient's motor function, urination, physiological function, and quality of life. If not intervened correctly, the risk of permanent paralysis of both lower limbs is very high." – Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, 1st-degree specialist, commented.

Given this complex injury, Dr. Hung decided to perform surgery using Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) technique, one of the latest advancements in spinal disease treatment, characterized by small incisions, less pain, and rapid recovery.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung skillfully performs minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques for the treatment of multiple complex spinal injuries.

With in-depth expertise in neurosurgery and spinal care, and extensive experience in handling three-dimensional spinal deformities, Dr. Hung has skillfully performed minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS) techniques, decompressing compressed nerve roots, removing damaged nucleus material, widening the spinal canal, and stabilizing slipped vertebrae, correcting scoliosis through a percutaneous screw-rod system.

This precision in indication and surgical technique has helped patients recover quickly, avoiding the risk of recurrence and complications.

"Previously, this type of case typically involved open surgery, requiring a long incision on the back, extensive dissection of muscle tissue, causing significant pain and slow recovery time, and leaving a large scar. However, with the current minimally invasive spinal surgery method, we only need a 2cm skin incision to precisely access the injured area through a dilator system, minimizing damage, less pain, and bringing treatment outcome to patients" shared Dr. Hung.

“Quality of life is very important”

02-week follow-up examination after surgery, Mr. N.H.T shared: “I was previously advised regarding surgery at another place that the success rate was only about 50%, and the chance of returning to work was very low, so I hesitated. I am very afraid of pain, but after surgery at AIH, my recovery exceeded expectations.”

Dr. Hung stated that due to fear of pain or failed surgery, many patients silently endure and choose unconventional treatments.

With the advancement of minimally invasive techniques today, many complex spinal conditions can be treated effectively, with less pain, rapid recovery, and restoration of quality of life.

Dr. Hung emphasized that our treatment goal is not just to stop pain reduction or improved mobility, but to help patients live happily, live healthily, and regain their inherent quality of life; that is the complete success of the treatment process.
