DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR TEETH PROPERLY DURING PREGNANCY?

Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase the risk of developing gum disease, affecting the health of the developing baby in the uterus. Here are some dentist tips to help you maintain the best oral health during pregnancy.

  • The dentist needs to know that you are pregnant. Routine dental checkups can be done at any time throughout the pregnancy. However, before that, consult your obstetrician.
  • List for the dentist the names and dosages of all medications you are taking, including medications and vitamins prescribed by your doctor, as well as any specific advice from your doctor. Your dentist will be able to make changes to your dental treatment plan based on this important information.
  • Dental X-rays can be taken during pregnancy if necessary. However, your dentist will cover your abdomen and thyroid to protect you and your baby.
  • During pregnancy, regular periodontal (gum) check-ups are extremely important because hormonal changes during pregnancy put you at risk for periodontal disease and bleeding gums. If your gums hurt, bleed, or swell, talk to your doctor or dentist as soon as possible.
  • Perform proper oral hygiene to prevent and/ or reduce oral health problems.
  • If morning sickness makes you uncomfortable when brushing your teeth, change to another toothpaste during pregnancy under the advice of a dentist.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash if you have morning sickness and frequent vomiting.
