7 SIGNS FROM PREGNANCY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH THAT MAY PREDICT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE RISK IN WOMEN

7 SIGNS FROM PREGNANCY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH THAT MAY PREDICT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE RISK IN WOMEN

01/06/2026

For many years, cardiovascular disease was often viewed as a condition affecting middle-aged or elderly individuals. However, new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology indicate that signs appearing very early in life, even during pregnancy, can predict the risk of cardiovascular disease in the future.

This means that a woman's pregnancy history and reproductive health are not only relevant to obstetrics but also serve as crucial information that helps physicians assess long-term cardiovascular risk.

Below are 7 important signs that women should be aware of and discuss with their doctors during health check-ups.

1. Hypertension in pregnancy or Preeclampsia

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, including preeclampsia and gestational hypertension, are among the strongest factors associated with future cardiovascular disease.

Women who have experienced these conditions face a higher risk of developing chronic hypertension, coronary artery disease, and stroke in the years following childbirth.

2. Gestational diabetes mellitus

Gestational diabetes mellitus does not only affect the current pregnancy but can also serve as an early warning sign of metabolic disorders.

Women with a history of gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease.

3. Preterm birth (before 37 weeks)

Preterm birth may be associated with vascular dysfunction and systemic inflammation. Some studies indicate that women who deliver preterm have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future compared to those who deliver at term.

4. Small for gestational age

When a baby is born with a weight lower than expected for their gestational age, it may reflect poor placental circulation or vascular dysfunction, which are also linked to the mother's risk of cardiovascular disease.

5. Recurrent pregnancy loss

Recurrent miscarriage may be associated with certain immune or coagulation disorders, which can affect the vascular system and increase the risk of future cardiovascular disease.

6. Early Menarche (Before Age 10)

The onset of menstruation at a very early age may be linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders. These factors contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease later in life.

7. Early menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome

Women who experience early menopause (before age 45, and especially before age 40) are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease due to the premature decline of estrogen - a hormone that plays a protective role in the cardiovascular system.

Additionally, polycystic ovary syndrome is frequently accompanied by insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and an elevated cardiovascular risk.

Why is this information important?

Many factors related to pregnancy and reproductive health are often overlooked when assessing cardiovascular risk, but current research indicates that they can help physicians:

  • Detect cardiovascular risk at a very early stage

  • Monitor cardiovascular health more closely

  • Implement appropriate preventive measures.

When should you consult with your doctor?

Women should share their pregnancy and reproductive health history with their physician when:

  • Undergoing routine health check-ups

  • Assessing cardiovascular risk

  • Checking cholesterol or blood pressure levels.

This information can assist the physician in conducting a more comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment and developing an effective, personalized prevention plan.

Cardiovascular health care for women does not merely begin in middle age; it can start from signs that appear as early as the reproductive stage.
