3 PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST NIPAH VIRUS INFECTION

27/01/2026

Amid the sporadic emergence of Nipah virus infections in several countries, on the morning of January 27, 2026, the Ministry of Health issued an official warning and advised the public to proactively implement preventive measures to minimize the risk of transmission, especially given that there is currently no specific vaccine or treatment available for either humans or animals.

How is Nipah virus transmitted?

Nipah virus infection is classified as a Group A infectious disease, with rapid transmission potential and a high mortality rate (40–75%). According to the Ministry of Health, the disease can be transmitted through the following routes:

  • From animals to humans, primarily through fruit bats.

  • Through food or items contaminated with the virus.

  • From person to person via direct contact with the secretions or excretions of confirmed or suspected cases.

Preventive measures to protect the community

1. Proactively monitor your health after returning from affected areas

  • Avoid traveling to outbreak areas unless absolutely necessary.

  • Within 14 days of returning from an affected area, if you experience symptoms such as headache, muscle pain, vomiting, sore throat, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, or seizures:

    • Go immediately to the nearest healthcare facility.

    • Limit contact with others.

    • Provide a full travel and exposure history to healthcare personnel.

2. Ensure food hygiene and safety

  • Follow the principle of thoroughly cooking food and boiling water before consumption.

  • Wash and peel fruits before eating; do not consume fruits showing signs of bat bites, bruising, or gnawing.

  • Avoid drinking raw, unprocessed palm sap.

3. Practice safe contact measures

  • Avoid close contact with fruit bats.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap after coughing, sneezing, contact with animals, or caring for sick individuals.

  • Limit direct contact with suspected or confirmed cases.

  • When caring for a patient, use masks, gloves, and appropriate personal protective equipment.

To date, Vietnam has not recorded any cases of Nipah virus infection. However, the Ministry of Health strongly advises the public not to be complacent and to strictly adhere to preventive measures to protect their own health, their families, and the community.
