3 IMPORTANT MILESTONES FOR EARLY DETECTION OF FETAL MALFORMATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

► 11-13 weeks 06 days pregnant
- The period of 11-13 weeks pregnant gives accurate nuchal translucency measurement results, from which doctors can detect some congenital malformations related to chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, congenital heart defect, diaphragmatic hernia…
- At this stage, if any abnormal image of fetal heredity is detected on ultrasound, your doctor will recommend amniocentesis to investigate whether your fetus is actually malformed or not.
► 21-33 weeks pregnant
- At 21-23 weeks pregnant, the fetus has a relatively large size, the internal organs have formed and divided markedly so it will be easy to detect malformations. Therefore, doctors will use 4D ultrasound to detect malformations in most organs, viscera, such as measuring the length of the limbs, fetal skull diameter; determining conditions of the heart, lungs, stomach… of the fetus.
- With severe abnormalities, doctors will appoint pregnant mothers to do next tests.
► 30-32 weeks pregnant
- At this time, the fetal morphology is almost fully developed in terms of face and body, doctors will check the fetal presentation, placenta, amniotic fluid volume in order to ensure the fetus is developing well at the last stage.
