HIP REPLACEMENT FOR A 91-YEAR-OLD WOMAN - A JOURNEY OF OVERCOMING TRAUMA AND RESILIENTLY RESTORING MOBILITY

For the elderly, a femoral neck fracture following a fall is a severe injury, which not only causes pain and immobility but also increases the risk of complications due to prolonged bed rest.

Recently, 91-year-old Mrs. N.H.T. was admitted to the American International Hospital (AIH) after suffering a fall at home. Following the injury, she experienced severe pain in her right hip and was unable to stand or move her right leg.

At the American International Hospital (AIH), X-ray results confirmed that the patient had sustained a fracture of the right femoral neck. After examination, Dr. Nguyen Viet Thinh, Specialist Level II, from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology ordered the patient's hospitalization to manage her pain, optimize her health status, and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

Preoperative comprehensive health assessment

Due to advanced age and multiple underlying medical comorbidities, the patient underwent a comprehensive preoperative evaluation by Dr. Nguyen Viet Thinh and a multidisciplinary team to optimize her health status. During hospitalization, the patient's pain was managed, and her cardiovascular and respiratory conditions were stabilized.

Upon examination, the patient reported severe pain in the right hip region with restricted hip joint mobility. Following a multidisciplinary consultation, Dr. Nguyen Viet Thinh indicated a partial right hip replacement surgery.

A femoral neck fracture can cause elderly individuals to lose their ability to walk if not treated promptly.

Partial hip replacement enables patients to regain mobility soon

According to Dr. Thinh, for elderly patients with femoral neck fractures, the treatment goal is not only to address the injury but also to help patients regain mobility early and minimize complications caused by prolonged immobility. Partial hip replacement is an appropriate treatment method in many cases, helping to replace the fractured femoral head, relieve pain, and enable patients to start physical activity early after surgery.

The surgery went smoothly with the coordination of the Orthopedic Trauma and Anesthesiology teams. After the operation, the patient was closely monitored, pain was controlled, and appropriate rehabilitation were provided according to her physical condition.

A journey of resilient recovery

A few days after the surgery, the elderly woman was able to put weight on her feet and began practicing walking under the guidance of the rehabilitation team. At 91 years old, this is not only a result of medical treatment but also a patient's resilient willpower. Every time she sat up, every attempt to stand, and every step she took required extraordinary effort.

Behind those determined steps lies a combination of appropriate treatment methods, the dedicated companionship of the medical staff, and the patient's own determination. According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Thinh, in the elderly, advanced age is not a barrier provided that the patient receives the correct treatment and persistently engages in postoperative rehabilitation. “Every walking exercise is precious, helping patients gradually return to their normal daily rhythm and maintain independence in their daily lives”.

At the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, American International Hospital (AIH), each patient is provided with a personalized treatment and recovery plan tailored to their age, health condition, and mobility needs. The team of doctors works closely with relevant specialties to conduct comprehensive pre-operative evaluations, select appropriate treatment methods, and closely monitor the post-operative recovery process.
