Shingles is a disease caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV). This is also the virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus does not completely disappear but hides in the nerve ganglia. When the immune system is weakened due to advanced age, stress, underlying medical conditions, immunosuppressive treatments, etc., the virus can reactivate, traveling along the nerve pathway to the corresponding skin area, causing neuritis combined with skin lesions. That is shingles—a common dermatological-neurological pathology that should not be taken lightly as it can lead to many dangerous complications.

Shingles typically progresses through the following stages:

  • Prodromal stage: Before skin lesions appear, patients frequently experience pain, burning, numbness, itching, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of intense heat or fatigue and low-grade fever.

  • Acute outbreak stage: After a few days (1–3 days), erythematous rashes may be observed, followed by the appearance of fluid-filled vesicles, typically on one side of the body (unilateral) along the path of a nerve. These vesicles can rupture, leak fluid, and cause pain, soreness, and discomfort.

  • Post-shingles stage: Once the vesicles have healed and the dry crusts have shed, they may leave scars and skin discoloration. A severe sequela is post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN): persistent pain, burning, and a stinging sensation even after the skin has fully healed.

If not cared for or treated promptly, shingles can lead to:

  • Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), characterized by prolonged pain persisting after the skin has healed, which severely impacts quality of life.

  • If ocular regions are affected: keratitis, ocular damage, and even vision loss.

  • Neurological complications: facial paralysis if the facial nerve is impacted.

  • Secondary bacterial infections of the damaged skin, resulting in scarring and skin depigmentation.

Prevention methods

  • Maintain a healthy immune system: get adequate sleep, eat a balanced diet, avoid stress, and exercise.

  • Manage underlying medical conditions well if present: diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

  • Avoid contact with individuals who have recently contracted chickenpox if you have never had the disease or have not received the varicella vaccine.

  • Getting vaccinated against shingles is a proactive and effective measure to protect your own health and your family members.

The Drug Administration (Ministry of Health) granted marketing authorization for the Shingrix vaccine, manufactured by the pharmaceutical corporation GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), in Vietnam in May 2024. This vaccine is indicated for the prevention of shingles and its complications in individuals aged 50 years and older or individuals aged 18 years and older who are at high risk for the disease.

Currently, the Shingrix vaccine is available at the American International Hospital (AIH) at a promotional price of only 1,700,000 VND per dose. We are committed to using high-quality vaccine sources with clear origins and ensuring strict safety standards for vaccine storage and handling during patient immunizations.
